CLUBS / INTEREST GROUPS ~ ACTIVE, FUN, FRIENDSHIP

Arts & Crafts Group, You are welcome to join our group to have space to work on your arts and crafts.  We meet every Monday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Social Hall.  Feel free to come and work on your project for a few hours and meet other crafty ladies.  Some of the crafts include sewing, knitting, crochet, painting, scrapbooking, card making, and miniatures.  We love to share ideas and try to help those that are learning.  We are a very casual, kick back group looking to craft with others

The Belles of Corte Bella, was established in 2004.  The Red Hat Society is a unique ‘disorganization’ of women who gather together in small clusters, large crowds and even massive throngs in order to share one another’s lives and to make our own fun.  We make a conscious choice about what kind of older women we are on our way to becoming, embracing life and one another in equal measure.  We dress in our royal regalia of purple & red as we strut our stuff from a fancy tea at the Phoenician or the Ritz to donning our night-time apparel to enjoy a pajama party at Cocoa’s restaurant. We have no routine schedule for our monthly meetings but arrange them according to the event.  We’re attended the Arizona Red Hat State Convention, Tri-State T’s held in Laughlin, Nevada each year and locally just plain and simple gone out to the movies, shopping and lunch.  While our goal is to have fun we can be found doing things like collecting books for the children’s Cancer Hospital, collecting food for the food bank and stuffing Christmas stockings for low income seniors which we do annually. Ladies 50 and older are eligible for Red Hat membership and ladies under 50 are eligible for pink hat membership.  All ladies of Corte Bella are invited join the sisterhood of the Belles of Corte Bella.

Bid Whist.  A group which enjoys a game of skills and strategy.  It is a variant, played in the United States of the classic card game Whist.  As indicated by the name, bid whist adds a bidding element to the game that is not present in classic whist.  It is generally accepted that the game of bridge came from the game of whist.  Derin Dickerson is commonly acknowledged as the inventor of Bid Whist.  Bid Whist, along with spades, remains popular particularly in African-American culture, and US Military culture. Our Corte Bella Bid Whist group meets in various homes, rotating among our members.  We offer fun, food and prizes every 2nd Friday of the month.

Corte Bella Book Club.  Meets the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Social Hall at 1:30 pm. We read every type of book from best sellers to classics. When we read East of Eden, a member hosted an East of Eden luncheon that included themed food selections and James Dean even joined us for lunch. We read Loving Frank and in addition to discussing the book, we went to Taliesin West and enjoyed a tour of Mr. Wright's Arizona home. The CB Book Group is a great group of people who enjoy reading and discussing books along with a special event or luncheon thrown in for even more fun and enjoyment.

Bocce Ball.  Everyone is invited, beginner to pro, to come and join any or all of our groups.   Date and time information available in Fitness Center, CB Times or on website.

Couples Bridge Groups.  We now have 2 groups, one meets on  the second Saturday and the other meets on the fourth Friday.  We serve lite snacks and dessert. We take turns hosting. The host couple provides the food and drinks and contacts the players.

Bunco and other Games.  Different groups have been formed for Bunco and Mexican Train. Bunco is easy to learn and it is a very good mixer.  We take turns hosting and we also have lite snacks and dessert.

Hand & Foot Canasta.  2nd and 4th Mondays  6:00 - 8:45 pm in the restaurant bar or the  Social Hall.  'Come on up" and join us for several hours of hand and foot canasta.  Our group can be anywhere from 8 to 25 players and each of 5 rounds means a new partner and a new acquaintance.  The game itself is very simple to learn and can be played well the first evening.

Cellar Dwellers.   The Cellar Dwellers have evolved into a large and popular social group, with members meeting regularly in private homes and occasionally outside venues. The Cellar Dwellers is a social group that gets together regularly to taste wines from all over the world -- both for fun and to increase their knowledge.  This fall starts our fourth year of existence.  Members enjoy events either in the homes of members or at outside venues. Newcomers are welcome to join by notifying the founders and administrators of the group, Michael and Robin Mandell.  Invitations to all events are sent via private e-mail, and attendance is based on RSVPs on a first-come, first-served basis.  Members are asked to host, or co-host, an event in their home, providing light snacks -- attendees will bring that evening's theme wine and their own wine glass. Cheers!

Chess Club.  Interested  in a Bit Of Intellectual Stimulation? There’s a chess club.

Red Hat Ladies "Classie Belles of Corte Bella”.  Our members enjoy different outings monthly to various new and great eateries!  To add to our events, we have also painted pottery, traveled to Cave Creek for shopping; made a donation at the casino; we are planning to visit Glendale Glitters and attend AZ Broadway Theatre and various other SISTER events.  Ladies must be at least 50 years young and adorn that red hat and purple outfit!

Euchre.  A trick-taking card game most commonly played with four people in two partnerships (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trick-taking_game  for detailed information). Our 3 table group meets on the 4th Tuesday each month in member’s homes.  There are various versions of euchre and the host selects the version, serves appetizers and drinks.

Corte Bella Players.  It started in a hospitable home, in our own quiet community.  A few neighbors and friends, some knowing each other, some not, met with glimmers in their eyes and thoughts of yesteryear.  The lights, action, the music – combined with camaraderie, fun and fulfillment – and so the CORTE BELLA PLAYERS were formed ready to share a theatrical experience with Corte Bella and the surrounding communities.  Much more than an interest group – an interesting group - like-minded thespians poised to enjoy the last 1/3rd of their lives, both on stage and off.  The group would love to increase our ranks, whether for our Halloween event, or just in general.  If you crave lights and action to express your inner being or if you are back-staged oriented (sound, lights, props or anything else for that matter), join us.

Corte Bella Cribbage Group.  Meets every other Wednesday at 6:00 pm at the Social Hall.  We have all levels of players from novice to champions and the champs help the novices and the novices sometimes even help the champs catch a "15/2" they missed.  We are a fun group of players and enjoy the friendship that this group provides.

Duplicate Bridge Group. We play in the Social room every Tuesdays afternoon from 1:30 to 4:30 pm. It started in February 2006 and has been very successful since then. We used to have 3 to 5 tables in the summer and 6 to 8 tables in the winter. Since 2007 , we have 6 to 8 tables in the summer and 10 to 12 tables in the winter. This group offers the real duplicate bridge challenges with all the rules and regulations, but in a friendly “non-throat cutting” environment. Not only has the number of participants increased but we have also noticed a significant improvement of the skill levels as duplicate bridge is very competitive. This is a fun way to spend a nice afternoon and make new friends.  Also, players of all levels are invited to the ACBL Sanctioned games which are played on Wednesdays from 6:30 - 9:00 pm in the Social Hall.

Corte Bella Gun Club.  The Gun Club meets the Second Thursday of every Month at 6:30 PM in the Social Area's Bella Stanza Room.  All Corte Bella residents are invited to attend our meetings.  We review the laws pertaining to weapons and concentrate our efforts on pistol, rifle, and shotguns in the areas of education and information with Guest Speakers when available.

Inventor’s Club.  Did you ever have an idea for an invention? Almost everyone has. I am interested in starting an Inventors Club for those of us who want to talk about inventing, patenting, marketing, making things happen.

Italian American Club.  Are you (or your significant other) of Italian descent? Do you have a "paesan" lurking somewhere in your family tree? If so, why not join with your Corte Bella neighbors in celebrating their Italian heritage. The ITALIAN AMERICAN CLUB AT CORTE BELLA (no dues) is a group dedicated to just that through dinner parties and other activities.  The group was started in January 2009 and is already 140 strong. Members and guests gather monthly at the Anacapa Restaurant for dinner featuring Italian regional dishes and wines, all in a spirit of friendship and camaraderie. Other planned activities are Italian language classes, genealogy discussions, day trips, opera shows, and occasional entertainers at our dinners. Nothing complicated. Just good food, fun, and company, sharing a common interest.

Corte Bella Ladies Afternoon Tea Group Are you interested in meeting monthly with other ladies over scones and tea? Maybe you would enjoy a simple afternoon tea experience and the company of fellow tea lovers? Our members have had several wonderful years of luncheon, afternoon and high teas. Theme events  have included Valentine, Asian, and Hawaiian. And of course our annual Christmas Holiday High tea is not to be missed. More events are planned: tea tasting, theme teas, and tea history slide shows and articles. Sound good? If so, then this open Tea Group is for you! Contact:

Corte Bella Ladies Tea Society. The original High Tea Society is currently in its 4th year.  A great group of ladies who enjoy a variety of teas and conversation.   We meet once a month in members homes either for High Tea, Scones and Cream Tea,  Afternoon Tea or just Dessert Tea.   Members are scheduled to Host and/or Co-Host a Tea in their home, the Day, Time and Theme of their choice.   We also plan visits to various Tea Rooms/Cottages/Restaurants during the Summer months and a special venue in December for High Tea at one of the fabulous hotels in the valley.  Please join us for Tea  and  lively conversation

Mahjongg  II. We teach, we play, we invite beginners to seasoned players to join us in the Anacapa on Mondays from 10am  to whenever.

Open Bridge. Meets Thursday afternoon in the social/banquet facility from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. No partner is needed in that we rotate players every four hands. Skill level is intermediate and above with 24 hands played within the three hour period. Just show up for some fun and friendly bridge.

Pickle Ball.  Pickle ball is a game that is played on a badminton sized court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.   The game involves strategies such as lobbing and fast volleys. Many Corte Bella residents have found that pickle ball can be fun while getting exercise and enjoying the Arizona weather.  Anyone can play pickle ball and the rules are easy to master.  There is open play for men and women on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings at 8:00.  Starting in early fall you can also find us playing on most Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday evenings beginning at 6:30. The courts are located by the tennis courts. Come out and watch us play; just bring a paddle (you can check out one at the Fitness Center).  You will want to play after you see how much fun it can be.

Poker Tournament.   We meet the 1st Monday of every month in the Social Hall for a lively evening of social gaming with Texas Hold ‘Em Poker.  Registration is at 5:00 pm and the tournament start at 5:30 pm.

Scrabble Group. We meet on Fridays from 1:00-3:00 for Scrabble. We always have snowbirds and new people whom we teach...occasionally the date may be changed when people are busy or traveling. Scrabble is a giant crossword board game, where each person gets 7 tiles and build upon each new word...getting a "bingo" means that you have played 7 tiles at once, earning your word score and 50 bonus points.  We meet at each other's homes, most of the time. Up to four players can play at each board...we have a lot of fun and it is said, that playing Scrabble or other word games, can help to prevent early Alzheimer's. All of us are still ok!

Shalom Club. The group is a Faith based Social Club holding Social Events usually once a month for Members (a small nominal annual dues is required for membership). Events have included brunch at the Anacapa, Cake and Conversation, Western Night, Chanukah and pool parties, and progressive dinners to name a few.  This is our third year and we are looking forward to continued good times for all.  All residents are welcome to join us.

Corte Bella Singles.  Hey you!  Yeah, you.  You're reading this because you're single and somewhat interested in knowing what this club is all about.  Right?  We are twelve guys and twenty-four gals and we're all single – we are the core group of the club.  We would like you to join - or rejoin - us as we kick-start this fall with new activities and a renewed membership drive. Yeah, we're going to continue dining out once a month at various fun spots close to home – and yes, we'll have hors d'oeuvres/BYOB parties, but the fun doesn't stop there.  We'll be going on group outings and overnights to proposed locations like Tubac, Tombstone, Laughlin, Sedona etc.  Want to come along?  We would love to have you join us.  So, dust off your frown and put your best foot forward for a trial “hello” anytime soon.  Will you fit in?  You should, as we are a mix of doers, loners, dancers, cooks, divorced, widowed gabbers and geezers.  We're short, tall, fat, slim and mostly grey.  We travel, nosh, play cards, make new friends and here is a friendly group to enhance your lifestyle. No, we are not a “dating club” but some warm friendships have happened and the group dynamics and activities sure beats TV and being alone.  Most of us have life outside of Corte Bella and all of us have a life in Corte Bella.  Join us and you will find there is zing right here.  Give it a try and give us a call.

Corte Bella Tennis Club.  We epitomize the heading of this page which says the Corte Bella groups are active (we are), have fun (we do), have friendships (yes, we do that too).  We have all types of tennis at Corte Bella - we have open and relaxed play on a drop-in basis, we have league play which is more competitive, we have club tournaments, some of which are for fun and some of which are for real.  We play throughout the year, simply adjusting our times to accommodate the weather.  If you haven't played for a while, we offer lessons and there is a ball machine available.  Come out and join us.  You'll have a great time.  Check out our bulletin board for more information.  It's located outside the tennis courts.
